Being slim or having a normal BMI does not necessarily indicate good health. A person can have relatively high body fat and low muscle mass, a combination often referred to as sarcopenic obesity. Low muscle mass can affect glucose use and physical strength, while excess body fat is associated with insulin resistance and metabolic problems. Improving body composition involves maintaining adequate protein intake, performing regular resistance training, staying physically active, getting enough sleep, and looking beyond body weight alone. Building muscle while reducing excess body fat can support long-term metabolic and physical health.
