Persistent tiredness can sometimes be associated with inadequate intake or low levels of important nutrients. Iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, vitamin C, iodine, and zinc all support different functions involved in energy production, oxygen transport, nervous system activity, immunity, and metabolism. Deficiency is not the only possible cause of fatigue, however. Poor sleep, stress, dehydration, medications, infections, and underlying health conditions can also contribute. A varied diet containing vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and appropriate protein sources can support nutritional needs. Persistent or unexplained fatigue should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
