Have you ever wondered how we can accurately determine the source of sound? The secret lies largely in the delicate folds of our ears—the pinna. It's more than just a decorative ornament; it's a sophisticated sound collector. Its unique concave and convex shape creates subtle reflections and delays in sound waves arriving from different directions. The brain analyzes these subtle differences to accurately localize the source of sound. Our interactive exhibit, "The Role of the Pinna," allows you to experience this marvel of bioengineering firsthand. The exhibit consists of a rotatable chair, earpieces, and a large, adjustable model of the pinna. Participants sit down and place their ears against the earpieces. Then, by rotating the chair and adjusting the dials on either side, they change the orientation of the large pinna model above them.
